Katie Washington Cole ’10

Katie Washington Cole graduated in 2010 as the Notre Dame valedictorian. She is completing MD and PhD degrees, with a full scholarship, at the Johns Hopkins Schools of Medicine and Public Health. Through this work, Ms. Cole is integrating clinical and research training into community-engaged scholarship to promote maternal and child health. She has served as a teaching assistant in several courses at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, while conducting research in the Department of Health Behavior and Society and in the Center for Child and Community Health Research at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Ms. Cole is involved in various community service and service learning initiatives. She serves as a Student Governing Board Member for the Student Outreach Resource Center (SOURCE). She previously served as the Community Service Liaison to the Student National Medical Association Region VI, which includes medical school chapters throughout Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. Katie also received a fellowship from the Health Resources and Services Administration to develop and pilot a quality improvement tool in partnership with the Southeast Early Head Start Program in Baltimore.

Her husband, Charles Cole is an investment professional at the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust. Katie and Charles live in Baltimore, Maryland.
