Shayla Rumely ’76

Shayla Keough Rumely graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1976 with a BA in Modern Languages. She went on to receive her JD from Emory University School of Law in 1979. Upon graduation, Shayla began her career at a private practice in Atlanta, where she eventually specialized in intellectual property and advertising law. In 1986, Shayla was approached by New York-based American Lawyer Media and charged with transforming court calendars and legal notices into a newspaper that Atlanta lawyers would read. She served as their Publisher for nine years before retiring in 1995 to be with her then four-year old daughter and one-year old son.

Since then, Shayla has focused on volunteer opportunities and has served as a member of numerous nonprofit Boards, including Georgia Center for Children, Atlanta Legal Aid, Georgia Shakespeare (including three years as chair), The Howard School (including three years as chair), Families First, Emory University Board of Visitors, and the University of Notre Dame Law School Advisory Council.  She currently serves on the Boards of Trustees at the University of Notre Dame, L’Arche Atlanta, Agape Community Center, the Kuhrt Family Foundation, and as an Emeritus Trustee of the Howard School.

Shayla has been married to Chip, a law school classmate, for 29 years. They have three children: Mary Hannah, 25, Johnny, 22, and Bridget, 19.
